Welcome to the webspace of the Resilient Communities Project,
a research intiative based at the University
of British Columbia. Our project is concerned with the social factors
involved in the survival and resilience of British Columbia's coastal
communities.
The Resilient Communities Project (RCP) is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada under the Strategic Theme, "Exploring Social Cohesion in a Globalizing Era." This collaboration of academics, First Nations peoples, and government is concerned with the social factors involved in the survival and resilience of British Columbia's coastal communities. The particular theoretical focus of our work is on the concept of 'social capital' and its impact on social and economic structures in a community. Please see our project outline for more details.
The research team of Principal Investigator Ralph Matthews and Co-Investigators Brian Elliott and Terre Satterfield are collaborating with partners from BC Fisheries, the Government of Canada Rural Interdepartmental Working Group, the Coastal Community Network of British Columbia, and the Oweekeno Kitasoo Nuxalk Tribal Council to address the present economic crisis of British Columbia's coastal communities.
